Throwback Thursday: Chrysler-Themed!
Did you know that a Chrysler engine helped to break the World Record for the Fastest Closed Track Speed? Yep! Meet the “Mad Dog IV”. A redesigned Frank Kurtis Indy roadster with a back fin and inverted (upside-down) wings to create extra drag force.
Back in the 1950s, about the highest speed
accomplished was 180 MPH, on the Daytona Speedway. Mr. Bill France wanted to
see that record broken after a ban was placed on open-speed racing on tracks.
So, he set up a contest for a closed track race, instead, offering a prize of
$10,000. That was a lot of money back in the 1950s, so it attracted a lot of
car builders and racers!
After many attempted to break the record, Art Malone
(a Fuel Dragster Driver) drove Bob Osiecki’s “Mad Dog IV” at a walloping lap
speed of 181.561 MPH on August 27th, 1961! That is quite impressive!

Freaky Friday: 1963 Chrysler Turbine
Gee folks, I just want to apologize for taking an awful long
time to get this week’s Freaky Friday post up and running. A good way to look
at it, though, is that now, most of you should be home from work now and
actually have time to surf the net and read this post. =D
Anyway, I hope you like our selection for the week.
Ever hear of the 1963 Chrysler Turbine? Not many people
have. That’s because it’s production ended in 1979 and a majority of the fleet
was rounded up and destroyed.
That's because "Destroying the cars was the only realistic solution, for a number of reasons. First of all, selling the cars to the public was totally out of the question. Maintenance and support infrastructure would have been nonexistent. It took a team of five specially trained mechanics, dedicated full-time, to keep the brand-new Turbine Cars running during the public trials.
Not surprisingly, the bronze beauties were far from trouble-free. Expensive materials to contain the initial (not final) 500 degree exhaust and certain performance aspects unique to the turbine were also considerations. The Turbine Cars had to be fed kerosene or diesel, neither of which was all that convenient to buy. Leaded gas left problematic deposits on the turbine blades."
Now, Chrysler did their very best to preserve their fleet of Turbine, but "In 1963, there certainly weren't 55 car museums willing and able to adopt and care for these cars. The nine that were saved and allocated to museum[s] seems about right for the times. Super-rich private collectors, like Jay Leno, were not common in those days of high incremental tax rates. The Turbine Car program had fulfilled its purpose of gaining potential customer feedback, and it was time to wrap it up."
(To read more from this article, go here: http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2009/11/the-truth-about-why-chrysler-destroyed-the-turbine-cars/ )
So, sadly, we had to see it go. It's a shame, because if you think about the concept of a turbine engine, it really is something spectacular! It certainly would be something to pick back up today, don't you think?
Anyway, the reason we wanted to give you a bit of info about the '63 Turbine was because of our Freaky Friday photo that we chose:
It's not entirely "Freaky" at all, but the whole idea of the concept of a Turbine-powered car not having wheels, giving it the ILLUSION of being a sort of early-concept HOVERCAR, that's what we like about this photo.
We hope that you like it, too, and learned some interesting facts today! Please, let us know. Leave a comment below! =D

The First Jeep Wrangler!
Did you know that AMC discontinued the 1986 CJ series to introduce the 1987 Jeep Wrangler (YJ)?
Although the Wrangler shared the familiar open-body profile of the CJ-7, it contained few common parts with its famous predecessor. In fact, mechanically, the Wrangler had more in common with the Cherokee (XJ) than the CJ-7. With the Wrangler, AMC was able to improve the comfort, ride quality and appearance while preserving the durability and unrivaled off-road prowess of the Jeep CJ-7.

The First Civilian Jeep!
This is the first civilian Jeep, the "CJ-2A, and was produced in 1945. Advertisements proclaimed it to be "A Powerhouse on Wheels," again selling it as a work vehicle for farmers and construction workers. It came with a tailgate, side-mounted spare, larger headlamps, an external fuel cap and many more items that its military predecessors did not include."

Don't forget!
The World of Chrysler!
Ever wonder how a car is made? How about where it’s made?
Chrysler mapped their entire factory onto Google Maps so that you can take a
literal virtual tour of their Chrysler 200 Factory. Throughout the tour, you
can find easter egg videos which let you watch how certain machines operate
while building the 200. Such videos include the laser-braising process (which
seals the roof of the car) and the sealent process (which gives the Chrysler
200 one of the quietest cabins on the road).
So, for the curious, for the wonderous, for those who
ponder, this is a video that you should watch. It is a wonderful introduction
to the features you can enjoy. Of the knowledge you can gain. But also, it’s a
step into the world of Chrysler.

Going Glamping!
Ever hear of "Glamping"? It's not to be confused with
"Glomping" (which was a pretty popular term back in the early 2000s
which meant a sort of "tackling hug"). No, Glamping is much more
different and much more up to date!
Glamping is a new word that's hitting the scene and it’s
describing a new kind of travel: Glamorous Camping!
So, take everything you know about camping and throw it out the
window. We’re here to get you up to speed (briefly).
Glamping consists of fine dining, cozy digs, and sweet treats. It
is a perfect location on a perfect and warm sunny day. It’s basically it’s
trying to make the best day out of the most perfect day you can set up.
Instead of pitching a tent and getting dirty in the mud, you
spring up a wide canopy with cozy armchairs or a fine picnic table. Forget the
campfire, instead light some scented candles. No more paper plates or plastic
cups. Instead, you’re using fine china and belled wine glasses, serving wine
not soda. It’s camping for adults, by adults. It’s a day in a weekend getaway
to relax with good friends in fine surroundings.
After a hard week of work, it’s a great way to relax!
So, we’d like to share our video with you. TheJeepChannel followed
three women (Tiffany Mitchell, Jana Roach, and Elizabeth Cauvel) preparing their trip to go Glamping, their stops along the way to acquire their supplies, and all the way up to their final
destination. It really is quite a sneak peek at this new travel lifestyle fad
that’s popping up! Plus, it’s a very great feature of the 2015 Jeep Grand
Cherokee EcoDiesel.
